The Story
Conceived as micro cars that would provide stylish, affordable and environmentally sound solutions for urban drivers, the first smart cars, a joint venture between Swatch and Mercedes-Benz, were released on sale in 1998.
Despite their comparative fuel efficiency, the smart cars still ran on traditional fuels, emitting higher levels of pollutants than many cars, specifically sold for their green credentials. The solution to the problem? Develop a smart car that would run on an alternative fuel, meeting official targets for fuel economy and sustainability.
In 2005, smart lpg launched it’s first LPG converted smart car, beating the Government’s 2010 emissions targets and qualifying on the PowerShift register for 100% London Congestion Charge exemption. With the release of the new model smart fortwo lpg in September 2007, smartlpg has now reduced the cars’ CO2 by over 10g/km!
